About:
Needlework Records was formed in 2003 by Monk-A and Mr Trick. Its beginnings lie in the Needlework night of the same name that the pair ran through 2003 as the only night in London for turntablists to showcase their skills. In its 12 month period, Needlework played host to UK DMC champions like Quest and Blakey, as well as the 2003 UK DMC Team champions The Truesicians, the European ITF champs The SampleMoveMen and more.
When then-Truesician 2tall was offered a fairly lame deal to release one of his tracks on a US compilation, Trick and Monk-A made him an offer: remove the track from the compilation and we'll start a label and release the song ourselves. 2tall agreed, and The Rise EP followed soon after, with fellow Truesician (and now the 2004 UK DMC champ) DJ Blakey guesting.
Soon after, Trick put the call in to his old friend Waxfactor, demanding that he release something through the label. Wax agreed, and the Game Face EP followed to massive critical acclaim in July 2004.
And with that, the label was in full swing. A compilation of tracks, remixes, re-edits and skits from 2tall and Waxfactor was mixed and mashed together by Mr Trick in late summer 2004, and the subsequent mix "House of Needles" was pressed 5000 times and handed out as a promo item.
So what lies in the future? In winter of 2004, 2tall releases his sublime debut "Shifting Tides" - a bold and clear comment on turntablism as an artform and the naked emotion of music as a personal statement. In 2005, Waxfactor and Mr Trick release "Vengeance of the Volume", their joint album that features comedian Kevin Eldon (Big Train, Jam, Brasseye) amongst its guests. Also coming is the solo debut from Waxfactor: Sci Fu. A strongly narrative album, this aims to bring back the storytelling to music, colliding b-movie sci-fi with trademark Waxfactor beats and production, telling a story of... well - you'll have to wait and see!
Needlework Records: celebrating independent artistry and the power of the proactive.
